What are you doing New Years Eve?

Cue the holiday music and movies! I enjoy writing holiday cards and watching holiday movies like The Holiday, Love Actually, The Last Holiday, and Die Hard. Yes, Die Hard. It takes place during the holidays, therefore it's a holiday movie. I even have an advent calendar with Hans Gruber falling from Nakatomi Tower (see below) to count down the days until Christmas. IYKYK.

Here are a few home maintenance tips to keep your home running smoothly this winter:

• Replace your furnace filter if you have a forced air system. Bleed your radiators of any air so your radiant heat system works properly and all radiators are warm. If you have baseboard heat, remove any curtains or objects (especially electric cables) from baseboards.
• Remove garden hoses and winterize the hose bibs/spigots on the exterior of your home. This will prevent pipes from freezing and bursting. When temperatures dip below 32 degrees F outside, you may want to let a single faucet inside to drip or allow a very slow stream of water to flow into the sink to prevent pipes from freezing.
• Do one last clean out of the gutters and downspouts. Most trees have lost their leaves and they may have landed in your gutters which can clog the downspouts or create an ice dam. Icicles may look pretty hanging off your gutters, but it is a sign that the roof and gutter system are not working properly.
