Clean these things when it's hot out | A new strategy for creating generational wealth | Summer fun

by Jen Ward

I feel these cats. The heat dome had me wanting to lie down in front of the AC, too. I hope you've been staying cool this summer.

Ants in the House
If you've been indoors seeking refuge from the heat, you may have noticed more ants in your home. Cold-blooded insects get more active as temperatures rise, and summer is when ant colonies are at peak size: more workers, more foraging. The Real Simple guide to why ants invade during hot weather has practical steps for getting them out and keeping them out.

Tumble Dry
When it's 100 degrees outside, no one wants to heat up their house by running their dryer for hours. As lint builds up in the duct between the dryer and the exterior vent, your dryer has to work harder and longer to dry your laundry. Cleaning it once a year (or having a professional do it) brings your dry times back down and cuts your energy use. More importantly, it reduces the risk of fire. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates dryers cause around 2,900 residential fires a year, and failure to clean is the leading factor. Check out my blog for information on how you can clean it yourself.

Cleaning Out the Car
End of school year, sports seasons, road trips... If you haven't done a thorough cleanout of your car since spring, now's a good time. Pull out the floor mats, check under the seats, and clear out anything that's been living in the trunk. You'll probably find things you didn't even realize were missing.

Try Something New
We've reached the middle of summer -- a time when things slow down and many people are taking it easy. This is the perfect time to check out something new without needing to travel far. Whether it's watching people paint en plein air, visiting a sunflower market, throwing some pottery, or rounding up wild ponies, there are lots of fun things to do in Maryland during the summer.

Enjoy your summer, cool cats!
Jen
